These actually represent different stages in the process of decomposition. Interestingly, the species of fungi present at an early stage tend to be replaced by other species in later stages. The level of moisture in the decaying wood is a major factor. Moist decaying logs and stumps are likely to have more fungi than those at are noticeably dry. This fact should be kept in mind as one carries out a search for fungi.
