Because the fruiting bodies of many of the fungi that are found on decaying logs and stumps are relatively tough (often either leathery or woody) they tend to last for weeks or months in nature. Since of these can be found on still standing trees, in some instances even while the tree is still alive. However, the best places to look are stumps and decaying logs on the ground.
