For any log, the lower surface in contact with the ground is almost invariably is characterized by the highest level of moisture, and there are species of fungi that commonly occur on this lower surface. Often, one must roll over the log to see them. Since there are other things (think of salamanders, insects and even snakes) that can be found in this type of situation, be sure to roll the log towards and not away from you. Pulling away loose pieces of bark from the surface of a log sometimes reveals evidence of fungi what is otherwise not apparent. Such is the case for the dark rhizomorphs of Armillaria mellea.
